Auto-Fill with External Databases
When adding items to certain collection types, Magpie can search external databases to automatically fill in item details. This saves you from manually typing information like artist names, ISBNs, release years, and more.
Supported Databases
| Collection Type | Database | What Gets Filled In |
|---|---|---|
| Vinyl Records | Discogs | Artist, album, year, label, genre, catalog number |
| Books | Open Library | Author, ISBN, publisher, year, genre, pages, language |
| Trading Cards | Scryfall | Set name, card number, rarity, game |
How to Use External Lookup
- Open a collection that uses one of the supported templates (Vinyl Records, Books, or Trading Cards)
- Click Add Item
- In the add item form, click the Search button (labeled "Search Discogs", "Search Open Library", or "Search Scryfall" depending on your collection type)
- Type your search query (e.g., an album name, book title, or card name)
- Browse the results and click the one that matches your item
- The item form is automatically filled with the details from the database
- Review the pre-filled fields and make any adjustments
- Click Save to add the item
Tips
- Review before saving — External data isn't always perfect. Check the pre-filled fields and correct anything that doesn't match your specific item.
- Condition and value — External databases don't know the condition or value of your specific item. You'll still need to fill those in yourself.
- Not finding results? — Try shorter or more general search terms. For books, try searching by ISBN for an exact match.
- No search button? — The search button only appears for collections using the Vinyl Records, Books, or Trading Cards templates. Make sure your collection uses one of these templates.
- Works on mobile too — The same lookup feature is available in the Magpie mobile app when adding items.
- Completing a set? — Cards added via Scryfall lookup carry the set details Magpie uses for Collection Completeness Tracking.
