Appearance

Mobile App ​

The Magpie mobile app for iOS and Android gives you full access to your collections on the go. Add items with your phone's camera, scan barcodes, and manage your collections from anywhere.

Getting the App ​

  • iOS — Download from the App Store (search "Magpie Collections")
  • Android — Download from Google Play (search "Magpie Collections")

Signing In ​

Open the app and sign in with your existing Magpie account:

  • Email and password — Enter the same credentials you use on the web
  • Google, Apple, or Discord — Tap the corresponding button to sign in with a social account

Your collections, items, and preferences sync automatically between the web and mobile app.

Key Features ​

Camera Integration ​

When adding items, tap the camera icon to take a photo directly or choose from your photo library. You can add multiple photos per item.

Barcode Scanning ​

  1. Open a collection and tap the barcode scanner icon
  2. Point your camera at a barcode or QR code
  3. Magpie searches multiple databases (Open Library, Google Books, Open Food Facts, UPC Item DB) to find product information
  4. Review the results and tap to auto-fill item details

The scanner includes a torch toggle for low-light conditions and keeps a history of your recent scans.

Offline Support ​

The mobile app works even without an internet connection:

  • Browse collections and items you've previously loaded
  • Add, edit, and delete items while offline
  • Changes are saved locally and synced automatically when you reconnect

If any synced changes conflict with changes made elsewhere, the app will show a sync conflict screen where you can resolve each item individually.

Push Notifications ​

Stay updated with push notifications for:

  • Collection share invitations
  • New items added to shared collections
  • Comments on your items
  • Accepted share invitations

Manage notification preferences from Settings in the app.

Biometric Authentication ​

For extra security, enable Face ID or Touch ID:

  1. Go to Settings in the app
  2. Enable Biometric Lock
  3. Choose an auto-lock timeout

The app will require biometric authentication when reopened after the timeout.

Dark Mode ​

The mobile app supports light and dark themes:

  1. Go to Settings > Appearance
  2. Choose Light, Dark, or System (matches your device setting)

QR Codes ​

Generate QR codes for any item or collection:

  1. Open an item or collection
  2. Tap the QR code icon
  3. Share or save the QR code image

Scanning a Magpie QR code opens the item or collection directly in the app.

Bulk Operations ​

Select multiple items to perform actions in bulk:

  1. Long-press an item to enter selection mode
  2. Tap additional items to select them
  3. Use the action bar at the bottom to export, duplicate, tag, move, or delete the selected items

Exporting ​

Export collections from the mobile app:

  1. Open a collection
  2. Tap the export icon
  3. Choose CSV (spreadsheet) or PDF (styled catalog)
  4. Share via your device's share sheet — email, AirDrop, save to files, etc.

Tips ​

  • Pull to refresh on any screen to get the latest data
  • Swipe through item photos in the detail view
  • Deep links — Tapping a Magpie link (from email, web, or another app) opens directly in the mobile app
  • Global search — Use the search icon to find items across all your collections with filters for collection, tags, date range, and value
